Thanks for the reply.
Unfortunately the subtitles had already been created in FCP before I got involved, so I had no control over the way they were done. I have to confess to not being very FCP literate so I'm not totally sure how they were created.
The subtitles appear as :
<generatoritem id="TS subT3">
<name>TS subT</name>
<duration>1080</duration> etc. etc.
As opposed to the titles which look like :
<generatoritem id="Text1">
<name>Text</name>
<duration>3000</duration> etc. etc.
I have tried a search and replace changing "TS subT" to "Text" but subtitler still only recognises the Text rather than the TS subT entries. The parameter id for the actual text was already "str" so I didn't change that
As I say I've already got round it this time by cut and paste (there were only 449 subtitles !). It would just be a useful feature to have I think, particularly if a "TS subT" is a subtitle?
regards

as we say in our manual
"This importer is only to recover titles made with Final Cut Pro. We
do not recommend this practice. You should export a DV movie from FCP
and spot and translate within Subtitler. "
the problem to parse correctly these files is that there are so many
things you can do with a title tool that it is not easy to guess for
subtitler where the subtitles really are. computers are dumb.
"Note: This importer does only import "Text" effects, not "Lower 3rd"
effects. If you have "Lower 3rd" effects, you need to preprocess the
XML file in a text editor: Replace all "Lower 3rd" with "Text" and
all "Str1" with "Str"."
maybe the subtitles wre not really text effects? the importer also
does not know what to do if there is more than one element.
